By focusing even the tinyest circle of sunlight into one spot you can light a fire.  Applying this same principle to your business will set it on fire!! 

Today I want to focus (pardon the pun!) on what I believe is the single biggest cause of  failure online which is a lack of FOCUS!  Without focus no matter how much effort you put in you’re always going to be spreading yourself too thin to succeed anywhere!  Honestly, I believe it’s such a serious default that even working 16 hours a day 7 days a week with the determination of a bull terrier ripping the stuffing out of your sofa………..

If you’re not focused you’re setting yourself up with a 97% chance of failure!

The internet is so riddled with distractions that it’s extremely easy to keep allowing yourself to be roped into the “Next Best Thing” (NBT) and this is absolutely fatal!  I’m certain that pretty much every single marketer falls victim to these temptations to some degree. 

What’s important is that you recognize any factors that may be  impacting negatively on your business so that you can do something positive about fixing them. A doctor cannot prescribe a remedy before making a diagnosis.
A mechanic cannot fix your car before he’s worked out what the  problem is!  We cannot turn our businesses around until we identify the factors that are causing us to struggle.  I believe a lack of focus is the single most serious success failure syndrome to look out for and it all stems from this…

Unrealistic Expectations And A Get Rich Quick Mindset!

Our industry can, and does, make people extremely rich faster than any other industry on earth but it doesn’t happen within a few months on autopilot as you see claimed all over the internet!  The road to success online can be very fast in comparison to traditional businesses but only for those prepared learn, follow and stick with a proven formula for success long enough for it to have a chance to work its magic!!  The keyword is “comparatively” fast.
 
If it took you 20 years to build a successful offline business and you then managed to build a successful online business in four years then I’m sure you would agree that was comparatively very fast! Unfortunately, the hyped claims of online marketers peddling nonsense eBooks, have people believing they will be rich in weeks and when that doesn’t happen (because it’s impossible) they pack up and try the “Next Best Thing” they come across and if one gets stuck in that rut, you’ll soon be saying…. “Houston, we have a problem!!”

 The result of a lack of FOCUS means you wind up “Program Hopping” and if you’re doing this you need to STOP right now before you max out every credit card you own and are left wondering how that happened so fast!

There’s a common excuse for “program hopping” and that is to fool yourself into thinking that you’re building multiple streams of income in order to hedge your bets in case something falls over.  BEWARE, while this may sound like a smart thing to do, you will end up building multiple streams of debt rather than income if you’re not very careful!

Now don’t get me wrong, having multiple streams of income is a very good thing.  I have multiple streams of income in my business but there is a right way and a wrong way of going about it. Done right you can achieve this with no additional effort on top of what you’re doing already to promote your primary business and without joining every “Next Best Thing” opportunity!

However, that’s another subject altogether that I’ll be writing about soon.

The solution to finding your FOCUS is to search out your niche. Find something that you’re passionate about and that is a fit for you.  Do your research thoroughly and once everything stacks up then COMMIT 100% and stick at it come hell or high water.  Put your blinkers on to everything else and develop a one track mind!

Is it possible to overcome everything just by getting your head in the right place?  I found this awesome video on YouTube that really demonstrates how we subconsciously restrict ourselves NOT to perform at our best!! Check it out and you’ll see how much more juice is in your tank if you’re really driven to perform!

I’m no psychologist and I don’t why we do this but I do know that it’s a fact and that one can make a choice to overcome the syndrome! I attended a seminar with Dani Johnson once and she demonstrated this to us as well.

At the beginning of the seminar she asked us all to write down our names on a sticky post-it paper and to stick them as high as we possibly could on the wall.  Of course, at this point we had no idea why we were doing this. She just told us to make sure we each placed our post-it as high as we could.  It became real competitive and we were all pretty happy with our achievements.

Anyway, the seminar continued and much later in the day we came to this subject of why we don’t perform at our best first up. She then set about proving this to us and challenged us all to place a second post-it higher up the wall than our first.  It was amazing.  There was not one single person out of hundreds of us who wasn’t able to beat their first effort and most people beat it by a very long way!!

Once you are aware of this syndrome you can challenge yourself on a daily basis to perform way above normal levels.  It really is a matter of deciding to succeed and outperforming yourself!!

One needs to set goals and aim high but at the same time realize that success is a journey and not just a final destination.  You need to be setting mini goals and rewards for yourself all along the way.  You also need to be enjoying the journey and having FUN.  Life is for living and enjoying each and every day. By working efficiently and consistently you can achieve all your goals without sacrificing time with your family and friends and still enjoy whatever blows your hair back on a daily basis!

Dream boards of your ultimate goal are great but, to be brutally honest, looking at pictures of where you want to be is NOT going to make those dreams become a reality!  If you’re going to achieve those dreams you need to lay out what actually has to be DONE on a daily basis and DO IT!!  Consistent daily action to reach realistic targets is what will get you to your final destination. Your dream board is there to remind you to TAKE ACTION – Not Dream!!

You will be amazed at how far you get by just slowly chipping away at something.  In fact, sometimes looking at the entire challenge ahead of you makes it seem virtually impossible and you’re better off just focusing on the next little step right ahead of you!  Ask a serious mountain climber!  Firstly, you never get to the top by just staring at the summit from the bottom!  You get there by breaking it down into several legs with very careful route planning. Then each leg is further broken down into smaller climb sections.  Time goals are set to make sure you reach where you need to be by nightfall and you reward yourself with breathers, food, water and sleep along the way. While climbing, you forget the whole mountain and only focus on the small section right ahead.  As the going gets tough you end up setting your own little mini goals that might only be few meters or just one hand hold ahead.  In the end, you conquer that mountain literally one step at a time with a resolve to never, ever give up and the same goes for building your online business!

What does it really take to achieve success online?  Why are so many failing and what are those succeeding doing differently to the other 97% of marketers!!

There are five so called “Secrets” to success.  They’re not really secrets, in fact, they’re more like “Common Sense!” In this article I want to highlight exactly what one needs to be focusing on in order to succeed in your online business. It’s very easy to make yourself very “busy” doing tasks that are a waste of time and are diverting you away from what needs to be DONE in order to succeed.  The reality is that, on average,  people achieve 80% of their results from 20% of their effort.  Therefore, if one can identify what is effective and focus on those activities you’re going to save 80% of wasted time!!

Before I get right into this, the first thing to understand is that implementing these strategies for success is not something you can do overnight!  An online business is no different to a regular offline business.  It needs to be set up and run systematically to a business plan and built up one brick at a time on a solid foundation with careful planning. 

The truth is that there are no short cuts and the longer you spend looking for one the more time and the more money you’re going to waste being suckered into the empty promises of the next best thing.  The sooner you commit to learning one step at a time what needs to be done and then getting it done the better! There are 5 areas that you need to understand and implement in order to enjoy unlimited success online.   

1.  You need to build YOUR LIST and BRAND Yourself.

2.  You need INSTANT CASHFLOW.

3.  You need to be ADVERTISING & TRACKING consistently.

4.  You need to be FOLLOWING UP with your prospects.

5.  You need to be DUPLICATABLE & LEVERAGE your efforts.

1.  Building Your List -  This is the # 1 Priority and you must not spend a single dime on advertising until you have planned how you are going to build your list.  This is the subject of entire series of books but in a nutshell you need to be sending respondents to your advertising to a website you control on your own domain with the sole purpose of getting them to enter their contact details because you have offered them something that provides a solution for THEM not YOU! This type of website is called your lead capture page and will be connected to your autoresponder, your personal branded website or blog and your sales funnel.

2. CashFlow – Once you have set up your lead capture page you need it to lead into something that creates INSTANT CASHFLOW for your business.  It does not matter what your primary business is……. it is not going to be right for everyone and is better marketed on the backend of something useful and affordable to a broader spectrum of people.  This offer must be of great value to your prospects and if possible provide leveraged income at the same time.  These sales will initially help you offset your advertising costs even if someone is not interested in your primary business and should grow into a powerful stream of income in it’s own right over time.  For example, you may promote an MLM health product as your primary business but also offer an excellent marketing course that could be used by ANY marketer no matter what their business.  As long as you have selected something of great value and quality this broader spectrum product will give you a good chance of making a sale even if someone does not join your primary business.

3.   Advertising & Tracking – Once the above 2 elements are in place you are now ready to advertise.  The bottom line is the more you advertise the more people you are going to expose your business to and the more money you are going to make. You can have the best website in the world but without traffic – NOTHING WILL HAPPEN.  You build traffic step x step by learning one technique at a time, perfecting it and then adding another so that your traffic grows exponentially.  In order for this to happen you need to be tracking the results of your advertising so that you know which resources and what advertisements are working best. You can then cut out what doesn’t work and upscale what does and your income will grow exponentially.

4.  Following Up – It is extremely important that you follow up with your enquiries.  This is where you make or break your business.  People join ventures with other people.  You need to be a human!  Yes, we use auto-responders to help with follow up but they are not the total solution.  You need to reply to all your emails personally, you need to make yourself available to help, you need to be prepared to call people and receive calls and you need to not only brand yourself as an expert but you need to become an expert and WALK the TALK! 

5.   Duplication – Duplication provides leverage and this is the key to making a fortune.  As my mentor quotes…..

 “What one man can do in an hour, 60 men can do in a minute!”

The key is to work with systems that reward you for teamwork. In our industry virtually every service or product whether it is consumable products, advertising resources, marketing tools or training has some form of referral incentive attached to it.  One can turn all your business expenses into profit centers if you work with systems that can be duplicated by anyone so we all profit by association.
